Summer in New England is a time for fun and relaxation, but it’s also crucial to stay safe while outdoors. Whatever your outdoor activity, RIHI The Home Improvement Specialist has ten essential safety tips to keep in mind while you enjoy this summer:

  1. Keep hydrated

The heat of summer can lead to dehydration, so always carry water with you, especially during outdoor activities. Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty.

  1. Apply Sunscreen

Protect your skin from harmful UV rays by applying sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. And reapply every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating.

  1. Stay Cool

Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during peak hours (10am to 4pm). And seek shade, wear lightweight clothing, and use hats or umbrellas for extra protection.

  1. Watch for Heat Exhaustion

Know the signs of heat exhaustion, such as dizziness, headache, and nausea. And if you or someone else shows symptoms, move to a cooler place, drink water, and rest. If the symptoms are more serious, consider seeking medical attention.

  1. Water Safely

Whether you’re at a pool, lake, or beach, swim only in designated areas with lifeguards present. Never swim alone and always keep an eye on children. If you’re using a paddle board, kayak/canoe wear a life jacket to help ensure you stay safe in case you end up in the water.

  1. Beware of Bugs

Mosquitos and ticks are more active in the summer. Use insect repellent with DEET, wear long sleeves and pants in wooded areas, and always check for ticks after outdoor activities.

  1. Practice Grill Safety

When you’re grilling, place the grill a safe distance away from structures and keep children and pets at a safe distance. And never leave the grill unattended. Lastly make sure you turn off your gas grill or you extinguish the fire in your charcoal grill.

  1. Stay Safe on the Road

When you’re traveling, ensure your vehicle is in good condition and pack an emergency kit in case of a breakdown. And make sure you have some form of road service like AAA. Watch for increased pedestrian and bicycle traffic in residential areas.

  1. Stay Informed

Be aware of weather forecasts and potential hazards like thunderstorms, high winds, rip tides, or extreme temperatures. Plan outdoor activities accordingly and always have a backup plan.

  1. Stay Connected

Keep a charged phone with emergency contacts programmed.  And let someone know your plans if you’re heading out alone or to remote areas.

By following these safety tips, the team at RIHI knows you can ensure that your summer is enjoyable and safe. And remember that good preparation, awareness, and common sense will go a long way in preventing unsafe situations. RIHI The Home Improvement Specialist wishes you a healthy and happy summer filled with lifelong memories, Cheers.
